MCE LAUNCHES PLAN
'' I am inspired by this gathering. I thank IRC for the good work they are doing globally especially on the WASH programs. Our Municipality is grateful for their support over the past years.

All of us in this room have the power to improve the lives of people in the Municipality. And when I say Municipality, I mean our own Municipality, Upper Denkyira East Municipality.

Water, sanitation and hygiene are fundamental to human development – and progress across the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

When people have better access to sanitation and water, they are healthier – of course – and they can also work more productively, live more fully and contribute more to society.

You are part of a push for advancement that is succeeding all over the world. We should all be proud of being partners in this push.

Today’s gathering can be a turning point. The Municipality has a well developed master plan for WASH and NTD.

This master plan will enhance the partnership between all stakeholders through the development of a coordinated vision, strategy and purpose.
It will give us an overview to appreciate the costs for achieving the goals we may set for ourselves.
It will provide the basis for mobilizing resources and commitment from all partners when we want to implement this wonderful plan.

The benefits of this plan cut across health and the economy. As we are being taken through the plan, we will see that it will empower individuals and drive progress across the Municipality.

The overall benefit of this plan is that we want a society that;

1. A child free of disease,
2. A woman free of the back-breaking chore to fetch water,
3. A girl free to attend school without fear,
a village free of cholera,
4. A world of greater equality and dignity for all.

The Upper Denkyira East Municipality is with open arms to sponsors/ financiers to support the implementation of the Masterplan.
It is our ardent plea and proposal for all agencies to publish the Masterplan on their respective websites to attract the attention and interest of sponsors across the globe.

All stakeholders are therefore called upon to join hands in the rollout of this plan which commences today for improved Water, Sanitation and Hygiene to mitigate the prevalence and effects of NTDs across the Municipality.

On this note, the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Neglected Tropical Disease Master Plan is duly launched.

Thank you.''

BACKGROUND

Globally, it has been acknowledged that the provision of safe water, sanitation , and hygienic (wash) has broad public health benefits that reduce multiple disease and contribute to non-disease outcomes. The lack of potable water, occurrence of drought or floods expose people to water-borne and sanitation -related diseases as well as relocation problems.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of communicable diseases that affect more than one billion people and cost developing economies billions of dollars every year. Population living in poverty, without adequate sanitation and in close contact with infectious vectors and domestic animals and livestock are those worst affected.

Linking WASH and NTDs therefore has potential to impact on multiple NTDs through a single area of intervention. The World Health Organization acknowledges that the provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is a key intervention within the global NTD roadmap, as it is critical in the prevention and the provision of care for all neglected tropical diseases.

The 2030 road map sets global targets and milestone to prevent, control, eliminate, and eradicate 20 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and diseases groups. By shifting away from single-disease vertical programmes to integrated approaches, it aims to promote improved coordination and collaboration. Another distinct feature is to drive greater ownership by national and local governments, including communities. It is important to mobilise WASH ana NTD actors to work together to meet the NTD roadmap target.

RATIONALE

The WASH and NTDs master plan provide an integrated approach to the provision of WSAH services in a manner that simultaneously mitigates the incidence /prevalence of skin related NTDs through the achievement of safe and sustainable water and sanitation for al in Upper Denkyira Municipal Assembly.

The master plan serves as a tool for the local government and development partners to harmonies and localise their effort towards achieving the relevant sustainable development goals (SDGs) and national targets in their jurisdiction. The master plan supports the effective and efficient provision and utilisation of resources from all stakeholders as they jointly plan to provide resources to attain universal access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene and to reduce/eliminate neglected tropical diseases.

The WASH master planning is useful as it supports to:

  1. Enhance collaboration and coordination between stakeholders through the development of a joint vision, strategy, and plan
  2. Increase insights in required costs for achieving the set targets (national and SDGs) and
  3. Provides a basis for mobilising resources and commitment from various partners to implement the plan.
