The Upper Denkyira East Municipal Assembly Members Failed to elect A Presiding Member.: 27 out of 42 voted Yes. 29 was needed
On the 10th of April 2026 the Secretary to the Assembly, the Municipal Coordinating Director covened an ordinary Assembly meeting and not the Presiding Member(PM) because the 2 year term was up and there was the need to elect a new Presiding Member.
Meeting started @ 11:30 am instead of 9:00am because the Hon Assembly Members were not in the Hall yet,
Opening Prayer was said by Apostle Tetteh Charway: an Appointee and head pastor of the Refreshing hour International Church, The MCD called upon the EC for UDE: Mr. Rudolf Cheri to begin the Election of the PM.
Hon Kwesi Owusu Antwi moved a motion to quash some activities of the day but Mbradan Assembly member opposed.
The MCD after a short message on the motion called the EC. The EC Opened nominations and two Assembly Members picked up a nomination form. Hon. Sulemana Mumuni, Assembly Member for MBRAIM Electoral Area, and Hon. Kwesi Owusu Antwi, the immediate past Presiding Member: Assembly Member Atechem Electoral Area.
The EC gave 2minutes to each candidate to give a brief intro and speech
Hon. Sulemana Mumuni, pledged to work collaboratively with members to promote development in the municipality.
Hon. Kwasi Owusu Antwi thanked all for helping him serve for 6 years as the longest serving PM. He stated to withdraw from the race, thanking members for the opportunity to serve.
Following the withdrawal, Hon. Sulemana Mumuni became the sole candidate but was still required to secure at least, two-thirds majority of all Assembly Members. The Assembly is 43, including the MCE and the MP. though the MP has no voting rights in the election of PM. MCE has voting rights.
Voting commenced at exactly 12:07PM. some members even though present yet when the EC mentioned their names to vote the responded Proceed indicating they were not ready to vote.
voting ended at 12:20PM. After sorting and counting, twenty-seven (27) members voted “Yes,” representing 62.8 % . There were no “No” votes recorded, fifteen members present did not vote.
At least 29 members were expected to vote representing 66.66% which is two thirds of the total number of Assembly Members for Hon Mumuni as PM but 27 voted Yes. In view of this the EC requested a rerun
After 30 minutes of Assembly members deliberation The Electoral Commissioner declared the election inconclusive and called for a re-election in accordance with the law, expected within the next 10
President of the Denkyira Queen Mothers Association who is also an Appointtee expressed disappointment over the Assembly’s inability to elect a Presiding Member. She suggested that politics may have influenced the process and warned that such developments could hinder the progress of the Assembly. She appealed to members to resolve their differences ahead of the next election.
Though Some Assembly members had few misunderstandings about the sharing of the government flagship project on Nkokɔ nkiti nkiti with the MCE.
We believe and hope that all Assembly Members will consult each other and come to a consensus.
